What the models are actually good at
Language models are extraordinary at one narrow, commercially crucial thing: reading messy human documents and turning them into structured data. An invoice in any layout. A claims form half-filled by hand. A contractor's safety certificate scanned sideways at a mine site. The model classifies it, extracts the fields, and hands clean data to the next system.
That's it. That's the magic trick. And it happens to be exactly the work that buries operations teams.
What they're not good at
- Judgment under consequence. Deciding whether a claim is genuinely payable is a business decision with accountability attached. A model can recommend; it cannot own the outcome.
- Silent reliability. Models are confident even when wrong. Any workflow that assumes the AI is always right will eventually be wrong in a way nobody notices.
- Strategy. "Should we automate this at all?" is a question about your business, not about the technology.
Human-in-the-loop is a design principle, not a disclaimer
The mature pattern is simple: the machine does the reading and the routing; the human does the deciding. Confidence thresholds decide what flows straight through and what queues for review. Every automated decision is logged. The system is built to say "I'm not sure", and when it does, a person sees exactly what it saw.
That's not AI with a human bolted on for comfort. It's the architecture that makes the AI trustworthy enough to actually deploy.
